The Meetup will be at the Karma Kitchen. This is a vegetarian meal of simple means, served by volunteers. Instead of a traditional bill, you are urged to pay forward in generosity for someone elses meal.

The value of the Karma Kitchen for DC Voluntary Simplicity is three-fold. It shows how delicious, filling and nourishing a simple meal, prepared low on the food chain, can be. Further, it is a first hand experience of how well alternative economics can work. Further, the Karma Kitchen meals put you in contact with many people who are very conversant in or understanding of the principles of voluntary simplicity. There is a strong contingent at the meals that pursue meditation, in part, to help simplify their lives.

In conjunction the Nature Lovers "Booknic" program, there will be a lunch-time discussion of the first two chapters of Henry David Thoreau's "Walden" Wednesday in Dupont Circle. The book circle is slated to meet in the Northeast sector of the park (facing Starbucks). The rain location is in Books-A-Million, which is about 50 yards to the east.

The organizers invite people who have not read much of the book to attend if they wish.

This Meetup will discuss ideas on links found on the resources page of ConsciousConsuming.org
http://consciousconsuming.org/Resources.html

There are many interesting links here that approach voluntary simplicity from various angles.

I'm going to be spending time on the Downshifting page. Feel free to choose from the other 17 Web sites listed. They include topics such as slow food, taking back the time in your day, simple living and vegetarianism.

A developer is scheduled to begin retrofitting a building into a 16-unit condominium this year, ready for occupancy in early 2010.

I went to a meeting Monday night and found that the developer (see http://shermangreen.ning.com/ for more details) is open to eco-friendly and simplicity-minded ideas.

Further, he is exploring the concept of crowdsourcing as a business development tool. This technique is an attempt to have the community and the potential buyers become more involved in the planning process.

(Note and disclosure: Monday night's meeting was not a sales pitch, per se, but the developer is seeking buyers, and a portion of the meetings involve a dialogue between the developer and those who are in the market for a condo. However, others with an interest in energy efficiency are welcome to bring useful thoughts to the table. I have no economic interest in this.)
